I will be using Elluminate to facilitate a
1-hour discussion on PD Evaluation. Due to PD Evaluation practitioners being a small few, I am trying to invite a small but talented panel to join me as we chat about the different types of evaluation, what type of PD evaluation is already being used in our district, and perhaps what types of promising practices exist that we should consider. We'll see what happens between now and then. I'll be posting the BE number shortly so that you can join us if you are interested.

Great Marketing Opportunity

On Thursday, April 10, 2008, I was invited to give a short presentation on PD Evaluation at the Professional Development Coordinating Council (PDCC) meeting, here at HRD-Davie. The attendees at these monthly meetings consist of PD program managers and other professional developers from the district. What I was asked to do was to give an overview of PD evaluation, how it ties into their work, and then to share some tools that they could use to evaluate the PD they work with on a daily basis. The short presentation went well, and I used the opportunity to market the new PD Evaluation Application course that we are offering this summer. I also used the opportunity to direct any interested professional developers to this very blog as a resource for PD evaluation. I am willing and able to meet with any BCPS professional developer who would like to begin planning evaluation, or would like support with conducting formative and/or summative evaluation(s) for their PD program(s). Contact me via CAB or at 754-321-5026 if you are ready to to take the quantum leap...

PD Evaluation Application Workshop

Hi there, Broward County Public Schools professional developers. Are you interested in learning how to evaluate your PD program? If you are, then do we have the right workshop for you! Coming to HRD-Davie in Summer 2007 are two opportunities to participate in an application level training that was designed to give you all of the tools and resources for you to be able to create an evaluation plan for the PD program that you oversee. The first PD Evaluation Application course is being offered on June 26, 2008. The BE# is 10542668, and it is a 6 hour training that will be completed in one day. A second option would be to attend two half-days: July 8, 2008 & July 15, 2008 for the same exact workshop. That BE# is 10542228. If you are interested, please register on PDSS. If you have any questions regarding this workshop, please contact me by CAB e-mail or by phone 754-321-5026. I look forward to seeing you there! :-)

Interesting comments from PD Evaluation Essentials training...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NRYI1NfgsXk/R7YJXEsCoJI/AAAAAAAAABU/zphqU4Px3Aw/s320/GP1821.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167327914454327442" />
Teachers in Broward County Public Schools who are aspiring to become administrators participate in a rigorous program called LEAD. As participants in the LEAD Program, they must engage in various professional development activities and complete other requirements. One particular event that they must attend is Professional Development Evaluation Essentials. As part of this training event, participants discuss the value of evaluation to professional development, the 3 major types of evaluation, what evaluation is and isn't, and Guskey's 5 levels of professional development evaluation. As participants reinforce their new knowledge and skills in the area of PD evaluation, they discuss Guskey's 5 levels of PD evaluation a little more in depth to follow-up on their new learning and to demonstrate mastery of the training objectives. I wanted to share some of their insights with you:

*One participant shared, " Level 3 Organizational Support & Change is valuable to my job because it puts me "in the loop" about important documents. Often it is overlooked that minutes from a meeting, school/district records, and follow-up meetings can reveal valuable data that can support the impact of professional development."

*Another participant mentioned that getting feedback directly from the schools that her department works with provided valuable data as to how the department's professional development efforts were impacting the organization as a whole.

*In reference to Level 4 Participants' Use of New Knowledge and Skills, one participant remarked that how a participant applied the new information from training would determine how professional developers can improve future programs and activities.

*Referring to the same Level 4 of evaluation, a different participant commented that PD is an on-going process, and that it is important to look at the trends, student gains, and research to determine the impact on student achievement and job performance.

Insightful thoughts were shared by the LEAD participants on the value of professional development evaluation!

Welcome to the PD Evaluation Blog

We, at the Broward County Public Schools Human Resource Development department, are striving to provide all district and school-based professional developers with support. By focusing on the Planning, Delivery, Follow-up, and Evaluation of professional development, all professional learning that occurs within BCPS will be quality professional learning that aligns with the state and national standards. This blog will specifically focus on the EVALUATION of professional development.

If you are a BCPS Program Manager, you may have heard about or even attended the first evaluation course offered by HRD, known as PD Evaluation Essentials. In this foundation level course, participants developed a common vocabulary that focused on:
*the value of evaluation
*the intended results of the professional development program, event, or activity
*the 3 major types of evaluation and their stages of deployment
*Guskey's 5 levels of PD evaluation

The next evaluation course to be offered in the Fall 2007 will take PD evaluation to the next level of learning, which is the application level. In this course, participants will:
*determine what type of data is necessary to collect for PD evaluation
*select appropriate data collection tools that address Guskey's five levels of evaluation
*analyze the data collected to determine if the PD program, event, or activity is impacting student achievement and job performance

Maybe you're someone who needs to evaluate professional development.
